Day Two - The Cuff
Welcome to day two of our sock workshop!
Today, you are going to cast on the number of stitches based on the number you have calculated from your gauge swatch.
Again, we are using the Old Norweigen Cast On or Twisted German Cast On.
My sock is 64 stitches, so I cast on 16 stitches to a needle. Be careful not to “twist” the cast-on row when you start to knit. Take a breath and go slow for the first row. It’s easier to undo everything and redo a cast-on than to get six rows down and realize you need to rip everything out again.
This is the cuff of your sock. For this pattern, you are going to knit 2 and purl 2 every row for the number of rows you have on one needle. For me, that was sixteen.
Now why do I have you do this? Because Math. I find a sock is easy to knit with minimal patterns and trackers when the math is simple. You can, of course, do more or less than that, but the cuff takes the place of ties and the 2x2 ribbing keeps the sock snug to your leg.
And since you have been writing everything down, you now have a pattern started.
Here’s my pattern:
Sock Pattern
8 stitches to an inch, 10 rows to an inch
Cast On 64 stitches
Knit 2, Purl 2 for 16 rows. Place a marker on the first stitch.
That marker is so I can complete the next section without stressing that I have lost count of the rows.
We have now arrived at the start of day three of our workshop, so I’m going to give you spoilers: You are going to knit every row until you have the desired length of your sock. And here is my little trick: I knit the same number of rows as the number of stitches I have cast on, so I knit the next 64 rows.
